The Beatles Are Holding a Digital 'Yellow Submarine' Sing-a-Long
Musicians, artists, and actors are finding all kinds of novel ways to engage with audiences despite the ongoing COVID-19 shutdowns. Travis Scott held an all-digital concert in Fortnite that attracted a record-setting 12 million players. DJs and nightlife venues are putting on Zoom club nights. Cast members from classic shows like Friday Night Lights and The Nanny are hosting virtual reunions. And now, the Beatles are getting in on the action, by streaming their iconic animated film Yellow Submarine on the band's YouTube channel Saturday.
"Those of you missing singing together, I've got good news," said Ringo Starr in a video announcing the "special Yellow Submarine movie sing-a-long for kids, and kids at heart."
The film, directed by animator George Dunning, became an instant classic upon its 1968 release, thanks to its trippy visuals and use of the bands hit songs, including "Eleanor Rigby," "With a Little Help From My Friends," "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds," "All You Need is Love," and, of course, the Starr-sung title tune. Its groundbreaking art would later be hailed by former Pixar head John Lasseter as "revolutionary work," that helped create the "fantastically diverse world of animation that we all enjoy today."
According to the BBC, the film has long rumored to be among Queen Elizabeth's favorites. So if she (or anyone else) is hankering for a good sing-a-long, the movie will be streaming at 9 am Pacific/12 pm Eastern/5 pm Buckingham Palace.
