Batgirl Star Breaks Silence About Cancelled DC Movie
Batgirl's Leslie Grace, who was set to star as the titular vigilante, has broken her silence over the DC movie's recent cancellation.
Taking to Instagram to address the unfortunate news alongside some behind-the-scenes footage from the set, Grace wrote: "Querida familia! On the heels of the recent news about our movie 'Batgirl,' I am proud of the love, hard work and intention all of our incredible cast and tireless crew put into this film over 7 months in Scotland.
"I feel blessed to have worked among absolute greats and forged relationships for a lifetime in the process!
"To every Batgirl fan - THANK YOU for the love and belief, allowing me to take on the cape and become, as Babs said best, 'my own damn hero!' #Batgirl for life!"
Warner Bros previously released a statement that stressed the decision was "not a reflection" on the performance of its "incredibly talented" lead star, but was instead the result of a change in strategy at the company.
According to Deadline, Warner Bros Discovery boss David Zaslav wanted to commit to releasing first-run feature films in cinemas before releasing them on HBO Max, which Batgirl was originally scheduled to be released on.
However, because Batgirl wasn't considered big enough or designed to compete with tentpole theatrical releases, the company decided to shelve the project entirely rather than spending the money to expand the scope of it for cinemas.
Following the announcement, directors Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah released a statement of their own on Instagram, saying: "We are saddened and shocked by the news. We still can't believe it.
"As directors, it is critical that our work be shown to audiences, and while the film was far from finished, we wish that fans all over the world would have had the opportunity to see and experience the final film themselves. Maybe one day they will insha'Allah.
"In any case, as huge fans of Batman since we were little kids, it was a privilege and an honor to have been part of the DCEU, even if it was for a brief moment. Batgirl For Life."
