Barack Obama Surprises Michelle Obama During Her "Becoming" Book Tour

And compared himself to Jay-Z.

Michelle Obama’s book tour is underway, and the former First Lady got a pretty big surprise during her Washington, D.C. stop — one that included her husband, Barack Obama.

As noted by CNN, the former president prompted a huge cheer from the audience when he joined his wife at the Capital One Arena on November 17. And he didn’t come empty handed; Obama brought a bouquet of flowers in order to celebrate the success of the former First Lady’s memoir, Becoming.

The sweet moment was captured on video and shared to social media by Twitter user @Dearie16. In the clip, you can hear Obama jokingly compare his cameo to times Jay-Z has surprised Beyoncé on stage. “This is like - you know when Jay-Z comes out during the Beyoncé concert? ... Like, 'Crazy in Love?'” the former president quipped. “It's the same thing. It's just a little sample to enhance the concert.” Remember, just a few months ago, the Obamas were spotted at Beyoncé and Jay-Z's On the Run tour, dancing and singing along in the stands.

Prior to Obama’s big surprise, Michelle talked with moderator Valerie Jarrett about life since the White House, and what she’s learned in this new chapter. “We haven't had much time to reflect over these eight years because we were so busy doing and so busy trying to be perfect, and to get everything right that rarely did we have time to sit back and acknowledge what we've done,” she said. “And I was able to do that with my husband just the other night. And just look at him and say, 'man, man you did this. You did this. You did one of the hardest jobs on the planet.'”

And Michelle has had some surprises of her own in recent weeks. Earlier this month, the former First Lady surprised several students in Harlem as they attended a college prep session, when she appeared via Skype to give them post-graduation advice and tickets to her book tour. “The first black first lady is talking to us, out of all people,” one of the students said of the surprise. “We’re not always privileged, with the school we go to, with the opportunities we have, but that opportunity — no one can say they did that.”
