Barack and Michelle Obama Release Their Summer 2019 Playlist
Barack Obama knows the importance of a stacked playlist. The former President of the United States has been known to share all-star lists of music (and books, too) with the general public, reinforcing what so many of us already know: the man has impeccable taste. (Who could forget the iconic 2009 royal playlist he gifted to Queen Elizabeth II, complete with Broadway showtunes?)
On Saturday, August 24, Obama shared a list of 44 songs that he and former First Lady Michelle Obama have been playing on repeat all summer long — and we have a feeling there’s definitely some tracks that are on your Spotify top choices, too. “With summer winding down, here’s a sampling of what Michelle and I have been listening to — some new, some old, some fast, some slow,” Obama wrote on Instagram. “Hope you enjoy.”
The playlist opens with “Too Good” by Drake ft. Rhianna, and includes iconic songs of Summer 2019 like “Old Town Road,” “Señorita,” “Juice,” along with samplings of Beyoncé, Lauryn Hill, Maggie Rogers, and John Legend. To really mix things up, the Obamas also included classics from Frank Sinatra, The Rolling Stones, Ella Fitzgerald, and Van Morrison.
During the holidays last year, Obama posted another of his end-of-season roundups, featuring books, movies, and songs. At that time, the former president was filling up his playlists with music from Cardi B, Janelle Monáe, Brandi Carlile, and Normani, among others. As for his favorite book of 2018? “Obviously” it was Michelle Obama’s memoir, Becoming!
“It gives me a moment to pause and reflect on the year through the books, movies, and music that I found most thought-provoking, inspiring, or just plain loved,” Obama wrote in December 2018 of his tradition of sharing his top lists. “It also gives me a chance to highlight talented authors, artists, and storytellers – some who are household names and others who you may not have heard of before.” Here’s hoping this tradition continues throughout 2019 and beyond!
