There is a newfound cold snap in the New York City air. It finally feels like fall, and that can only mean one thing: You can expect to see all of your favorite celebrities, as they say, really start dressing. A handful of stylish folks apparently got the memo that this week was the precise time to bust out the statement outwear. Both model Anwar Hadid and rapper A$AP Rocky (who also moonlights as a model) turned to an oversized Balenciaga jacket to get off some inaugural fall fits.
Rocky was spotted wearing the instantly-recognizable coat with a black graphic t-shirt, ripped-as-hell jeans, and Converse sneakers. Hadid wore it with a similar (albeit slightly tweaked) vibe: velour-ish track pants, a vintage Beavis and Butt-Head tee, and also a pair of Converse kicks. (Neither wore it with the matching pants, though.) And then the jacket got the real sign of approval: at some other point in the day, Hadid's girlfriend Dua Lipa took it for a spin. (Or maybe Hadid was wearing Dua's jacket in the first place? Either way, sharing is caring.)
The Italian-made plaid jacket is designed in the iconic “cocoon” shape made famous by the late Cristóbal Balenciaga: designer Demna Gvasalia has filtered the fashion house’s legacy silhouettes into more contemporary-minded puffer coats and bomber jackets. The idea? Modern in fit but classic in silhouette. Plus, the loud plaid print feels very right for the season.
It’s not a huge surprise to see two well-dressed celebrities wear the same Gvasalia-designed item in the span of a single week. (Celebs love him!) Back in 2016, both Kanye West and Rihanna wore the same death metal-inspired hoodie by Gvasalia’s Vetements label. It's easy to see why both Rocky and Hadid gravitated towards this particular jacket, too. The down-filled puffer is an absolute must for when the bone-chilling days of winter come, but for autumn, you need a jacket that is warm and stylish but not overwhelming. (Puffy but not too puffy.) This jacket is precisely that: an eye-catching number that will make a fall fit instead of sabotaging it.
