Bad Bunny has already hit the top of the music charts thanks to his Grammy Award-winning singles — and now, his romances (both past and present) have propelled him to the top of the rumor mill. Weeks after he was romantically linked to model and reality star Kendall Jenner, the Puerto Rican emcee's ex-girlfriend filed a lawsuit accusing him of using a voice recording she made before he made it big on two of his hit songs without her permission. The suit was filed this month in a Puerto Rico court.

According to The Associated Press, Carliz De La Cruz Hernàndez claims she sent a voice note of her saying, "Bad Bunny, baby," to the star during their relationship and is seeking at least $40 million in damages. The musician first used the recording on the song "Pa Ti," which has more than 355 million views on YouTube, and then again on "Dos Mil 16," which has more than 60 million views on YouTube. De La Cruz claims her "distinguishable voice" has been used without her consent for songs, promotions, worldwide concerts, television, radio, and social and musical performances. "Since then, thousands of people have commented directly on Carliz’s social media networks, as well as every time she goes to a public place, about the ‘Bad Bunny, baby.’ This has caused, and currently causes, De La Cruz to feel worried, anguished, intimidated, overwhelmed, and anxious," the suit alleges.

De La Cruz and Bad Bunny began dating in 2011. A year into their relationship, they studied at the University of Puerto Rico, where Bad Bunny would reportedly get De La Cruz's opinions on his songs. She reportedly was in charge of scheduling his appearances and handling invoices and contracts. According to the suit, De La Cruz recorded the phrase in the bathroom of her friends. De La Cruz claims Bad Bunny asked her to marry him on January 1, 2016, and they made plans to get married that July, but he later signed with Rimas Entertainment, and she was accepted into the University of Puerto Rico's law school. De La Cruz reportedly broke things off that May and then reconciled in 2017 before calling it quits for good.

The suit claims a representative for the rapper told De La Cruz that he needed to talk to her in May 2022. “In that call, (the representative) said, ’I know you don’t like to talk about Voldemort (referring to Martínez), but I need to ask you something,” the lawsuit claims. According to the suit, Bad Bunny offered to pay De La Cruz $2,000 to buy the recording, but she declined. The rapper's Un Verano Sin Ti album was released on May 6, 2022.
