The Bachelorette Season 15, Episode 13, Recap: Now That’s an Ending

The mad geniuses behind The Bachelorette wasted no time kicking off this finale with a juicy spoiler: Chris Harrison, in studio, warning us we're about to see a proposal that in hindsight is "cringeworthy." I think we all know who he's talking about, but let's proceed with the recap as usual anyway. Spoilers ahead, obviously.

We're still in Greece, and Hannah must decide between Jed and Tyler. She says she loves Tyler because he always puts her first and makes her feel strong. Jed's strong point is that she can talk to him for hours. Hmm. And this is a hard decision, how?

The men choose which Neil Lane diamond ring they'll propose with. Tyler opts for a square cut that is as "loud and proud" as Hannah. Jed likes an oval-shaped diamond because it's "a constant" like their love. LOL.

In the car ride to the final rose ceremony, Hannah looks like she's going to be sick. As in "Jed's rocky waters" sick. She asks the driver to pull over, walks aimlessly down the street for a moment, and then gives us perhaps the greatest blooper of the season:

Poor Hannah. You can watch her just give up in that moment as she sits there in the middle of the street, her shoulders hunched with the weight of her decision. A nameless producer runs over and asks if she's OK. "I really can't do this," Hannah says, sadly holding up her scraped elbows. I personally would have loved to watch Hannah give out her final rose right there in the middle of the street, but alas, she collects herself and goes on with the show.

Unfortunately, the first to arrive is Tyler. Uh-oh. Rather than tell Tyler it's over right away, Hannah lets him start an adorably prepared speech about how happy he wants to make her. It isn't until he says he started falling in love with her on their first date that she cuts him off. "This isn't it," he says, resigned. Hannah tells him she meant it when she said she was falling in love, but she's fully in love with someone else. "That's gonna hurt, but I'm still going to be your biggest fan rooting for you," he replies. "I really mean that."

He keeps it together, telling Hannah he wishes her success with Jed. Once he's alone in the car, though, he tears up and admits this is a big blow.

When Jed arrives at the rose ceremony, he comes with his guitar in hand. Reader, I swear I screamed, "NO HE DID NOT" at the sight. "Talking's hard sometimes for me," he tells Hannah, before launching into a song with lyrics such as "we always knew it's me and you" and "baby, time stands still for us." Hannah loves it.

"I've always prayed for my future husband," she says. She's questioned why some relationships turned out the way they did, but now she knows it was all to lead her to Jed. "I have lived 25 years of my life without you," he says, "and I don't want to go another day without you in my life." He gets down on one knee; she says yes.

"We did it!" Hannah cheers. "That's awesome," Jed mumbles.

Of course, that's not the end of the story. When we return from a commercial break, we're treated to a few behind-the-scenes home videos of Hannah and Jed together after the proposal. "I thought I was getting someone sweet and honest," Hannah says. "And that's not the case." The day after the proposal, she reveals, Jed admitted that he had been "hanging out" with someone the week before he left for the show. He claimed he had broken it off, but they were never boyfriend and girlfriend. Hannah was annoyed, but she thought it was something they could work through. And then that People article came out.

"I love the person I got engaged to," Hannah says. "I don't know how I feel about this person."

And so the Bachelorette producers have arranged for the two to meet up in Los Angeles so she can confront him about it. Right away Hannah asks what really happened. Jed's version of events is this: He was hanging out with this woman, they hooked up a few times, and then went on a weekend getaway together because he "got a cabin for free." They stopped by his parents' home on the way back from the trip, but only because they lived near the cabin. He never "put a label" on their relationship or called her his girlfriend—and it's clear he thinks that absolves him. Oh, and he was sleeping with other women during this time.

It gets worse: This woman threw Jed a whole-ass surprise birthday party that involved all of his friends and family, as well as a trip to the Bahamas (from her parents!) as a gift. "And you don't call that dating?" Hannah asks, incredulous.

According to Jed, he told her he was recruited for The Bachelorette and was thrown off that she would still want to be with somebody who was considering going on a dating reality show. Hannah presses him, and he admits that, OK, he might have told her he was only doing it as "a music thing." Plus, he says, he never thought he'd actually like the Bachelorette.

JED. You are already in a very deep hole, but it's truly stunning to watch the new depths you seem to find. Here's an example: Jed admits he told this ex that he loved her...but only because he had been drinking all day in the Bahamas. Another: Once he landed in Los Angeles for the show, he felt that was it. It was not a "verbal" goodbye, he concedes, but it was ended in his heart.

Hannah points out that Jed slept with his ex the night before he left for the show, and then said "I love you" in a text. What else was she supposed to think? Then Hannah shows him texts she's gotten from women who had been to Jed's home in Nashville since the proposal. Jed looks at it briefly, then says, "Yeah, we didn't even know who they were!" No apology. Hannah has to explain that perhaps telling your fiancé about it would have been a good move.

"Obviously, I'm sorry," he says. He offers to do whatever she wants him to do to fix. Just tell him where he needs to grow and how to be better. JED. You are missing the point: Hannah, or any woman, shouldn't have to tell you how to be better. It's your responsibility to not be a dick.

Anyway, the crux of Jed's defense is that he held back details because he was scared of losing her. He's not perfect, but he wants to be "someone that you're proud of." Hannah points to her engagement ring. "It doesn't mean the same thing," she says. "It's not what I said yes to." She takes it off and lays it on the table.

Back to Chris Harrison in the studio: He brings Hannah out onstage, and she gives us a status update. "I am not with Jed anymore. The engagement's over. We're not together."

What a great time to bring Jed out onstage. He apologizes and says he was acting out of fear instead of "love and respect" for Hannah. Hannah accepts his apology, but she says her feelings have changed. "I think when that trust was broken, my feelings really just were broke with that. And I don't love you like that anymore."

There's a brief smattering of applause from the audience, but Hannah stops them: This isn't something to clap about.

After Jed leaves, Hannah says the whole thing has made her realize she doesn't need a husband. She's gone through a lot, but she's strong on her own.

What a great time to bring Tyler out onstage. Chris immediately asks Hannah if there's hope for rekindling that relationship. "I mean, those feelings didn't just go away," she replies. This is the first time they've seen each other since Greece, but Tyler says he's loved watching the season back and seeing how "strong and powerful" she's been. The breakup was hard, but he genuinely thought she would be in good hands with Jed. Still, "she's a fighter" who will bounce back. "The world is hers."

I mean...

Hannah smiles and repeats that she still has feelings. "I want somebody to be bold, and I'm bold and I make bold moves," she says. "You're an incredible guy, and I'm a single girl. I thought maybe we could go for a drink and just hang out?"

"I would love to. Just tell me when and I'm there."

Could there honestly be a better ending to this wild season than a real-life "to be continued..." tease? We—and, more important, Hannah—have had to endure Jeds and Lukes and Cams, but it seems she could end up with the right one all along. I guess we'll see!
