Peter Weber's season of The Bachelor reached a major milestone this week: the women's first trip away from Los Angeles.
Was this the most dramatic announcement by Chris Harrison ever? Well, we're not completely sure about that, but the reactions on the faces of the women when they found out where they were going were pretty darn classic. As with all things Bachelor Nation, there was a whole lot of lead-up to the big reveal. "There's actually not gonna be a date...because Peter's left town. He's left Los Angeles," Harrison said. "Ladies, it's time to pack up. The first stop on this amazing journey that will take us literally around the world will begin in a city full of art, culture, and rock and roll. Peter's gonna meet you in Cleveland, Ohio."
The looks on their faces show they were definitely thinking Harrison was going to tell them a more exotic or far-flung locale—and not the home of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, the NBA's Cavaliers, and the NFL's Browns.
As a Midwesterner, I take umbrage with this regional slander. Cleveland's a pretty rad town, with lots of cool stuff to do. But seriously, their reactions are low-key understandable given the show's storied history of trips to places like Bali and Croatia. They probably weren't expecting Harrison to send them to...Ohio. The women seemed to come around later in the show, though, calling the city "stunning" and a "tight-knit community."
Of course, fans took to Twitter to call out the hilarious moment. "All these girls on the bachelor throwing shade at Cleveland when they grew up in places like IOWA and ALABAMA ??? I mean," one wrote. "When you apply for the Bachelor thinking you’d wear dresses and travel to exotic places, but you ended up getting tackled in Cleveland #TheBachelor," another tweeted.
Hopefully, The Bachelor and its fans have a new appreciation for Cleveland after all is said and done. But the trip was definitely worth it for the comedic reactions alone.
