'Avatar' star pokes fun at 'Avengers: Endgame’s' box office success

Avatar 2 actor Cliff Curtis has thrown a jab at the fact that Avengers: Endgame eclipsed the fantasy adventure at the box office, suggesting that James Cameron’s film deserves more respect for reaching its haul as the first film of the franchise rather than the 22nd.

"You know, Jim, James Cameron and Jon Landau, they're very classy men and they salute the accomplishments of -- we got an email -- they salute the accomplishments of Marvel,” Curtis, who was cast for the upcoming sequel back in May, 2017, recently told Comic Book.com.

"Mind you, my perspective is because I'm an Avatar family, they came into that with 20 movies. And I think, you know, I can't wait to see what happens. Avatar's one movie. I can't wait to see what happens with two, three, four and five. What's going to happen? I'm so excited."

James Cameron and his Avatar team have been very classy about Endgame ending its nearly 10-year reign as the most successful film of all time.

After Kevin Feige announced at San Diego Comic-Con that Endgame was now at $2.794 billion rather than Avatar’s $2.790 billion the Oscar winning filmmaker took to the official Twitter account for Avatar to post the following message.

This then provoked the Russo Brothers, who directed Avengers: Endgame, to post their own message online showcasing their respect for Cameron, insisting that his work on the likes of Terminator, Aliens, Titanic and Avatar inspired them to become filmmakers in the first place.

We’ll see whether Avatar 2 can rival or even pip Avengers: Endgame’s haul when it is released on December 17, 2021, with its three follow-ups scheduled to arrive in the years after, too.
