Ava Max on Going Back to Brunette and Becoming a Superhero for "Torn" Music Video

Ava Max might be torn by heartbreak in her latest music video, but at least she also gets to be a superhero.

For her supercharged "Torn" music video, the musician worked with legendary music video director Joseph Kahn, who's the mind behind other iconic moments such as Taylor Swift's "Bad Blood" and Britney Spears's "Toxic" music videos. So it makes sense that there'd be superpowers and some sci-fi magic used for "Torn."

"I’m really involved when it comes to creating the video concepts. I met with Joseph Kahn and told him exactly what I saw in my mind. I pictured it so clearly. I wanted to be this empowering superhero that confronts her cheating husband playing dual roles of Amanda (just a regular girl) and Ava Max (a badass superhero). Joseph immediately loved the idea and he just brought it to life from there," Ava tells Teen Vogue. "Being on a set with Joseph is like watching magic and art come to life. He’s truly a genius and it was a complete honor to be able to work with him. Not to mention, becoming an avenger was a total dream."

And the music video also had a bit of a nod to Ava's rising career as a pop singer. The "regular girl" was brunette and Amanda for a reason: that's Ava's natural hair color and real name. When it came to filming, Ava also added some authenticity to the video by doing all her stunts herself. She spent the early morning of day two of filming working with the choreographer to perfect the fight scenes and ended up shooting it late that night at around 1:00 a.m.

As for what superpowers Ava would want in real life?

"I used to always say teleportation for those times when you want to skip the commute, the traffic, the wait," she says. "Now, however, I think I’d really love the power to just heal people. Heal sickness, sadness, and pain. It’s really all the world needs."
