Looks like Austin Butler caught on to the internet being less than pleased with him for calling his ex-girlfriend Vanessa Hudgens his “friend,” because he FINALLY credited her for manifesting his Elvis role. ICYMI, they dated for about nine years (!!), which is why this is so UGH-inducing.

Austin’s backpedaling went down during a chat with the Los Angeles Times, which straight-up asked him about the snub. And he actually interrupted the person interviewing him to make it clear he meant Vanessa, cutting them off by saying, “I was with my partner at the time.”

In response to the rest of the question, “and people have been saying you must have been with Vanessa Hudgens. So that’s right?” Austin replied, “That’s right. We’d been together for so long and she had this sort of clairvoyant moment and so I really, I owe her a lot for believing in me.”

Reminder: Austin had previously referred to Vanessa as his “friend” during a Hollywood Reporter roundtable, and people weren’t thrilled:

“The month before I heard that Baz was making the movie, I was going to look at Christmas lights with a friend,” Austin said. “And there was an Elvis Christmas song on the radio and I was singing along, and my friend looked over at me and goes, ‘You’ve gotta play Elvis!’…And then a couple of weeks later, I was playing the piano…that same friend was there and I was playing the piano. She said, ‘I’m serious—you gotta figure out how you can get the rights to a script.”
