Texas woman packing heat accidentally shot her 14-year-old niece during a gun lesson

Some say that the best way to learn to swim is to just jump right in — the same cannot be said about gun safety.

Houston police say a 14-year-old girl was accidentally shot when her aunt was attempting to teach her how to use a gun around 9:30 p.m. on Thursday, local news station KTRK reported.

The aunt fired one round and hit her niece in the arm and leg, according to authorities. She was taken to the hospital and will survive — although she may have a hard time trusting another mentor again.

While police have called it an accident, it is up to the Harris County district attorney to determine if charges will be filed.

This is not the first time that a weapon has been accidentally fired during a gun lesson resulting in an injury.

In March, a teacher at a Northern California school accidentally fired a gun while teaching a public safety class, injuring a 17-year-old student. Dennis Alexander, a Seaside City’s mayor pro tem and a reserve officer with the Sand City Police Department, pointed his handgun toward the ceiling and accidentally discharged it. The student was injured by a bullet fragment or by debris from the ceiling.

In 2017, a Detroit firearms instructor shot and wounded a man who was attending a gun training class. The instructor unholstered his pistol, pointed it at the door separating two classrooms, and fired a round. A man in another classroom was struck in both his legs.
