Auli’i Cravalho to Star in New Amazon Show "The Power"

Her character has a superpower.

Straight off the success of The Little Mermaid Live!, star Auli'i Cravalho is diving into her next project, and it's going to be a good one. According to Playbill, Auli'i has officially joined the cast of a new Amazon thriller based on the book The Power by Naomi Alderman, which was published in 2016.

In the book, which fuses elements of sci-fi, thrillers, and politics, young women discover that they can electrocute people via their fingers, and that this powerful ability cannot be taken away from them. They share it with the rest of the women in their community, then the world. Of course, this doesn't mean everyone lives happily ever after, and we'll see what happens as The Power unfolds via Amazon.

Playbill reports that Auli'i will play a character named Jos, the daughter of Leslie Mann's character Margot, who is the mayor of Seattle. "As Margot’s career takes flight, it’s her husband Rob and daughter Jos who privately feel the effects of her success most keenly; for one of them, where previously there was conflict now comes a greater understanding, and for the other where there was love, comes hurt and betrayal," says JustJared Jr. of the roles.

According to Playbill, the show will focus on a few young women, including a "faith leader," a journalist, the "heiress to a crime family," and Jos and her mother. The show will be helmed by Alderman and an all-female writers' room, and is set for a 10-episode run on the streaming service.

Prior to The Power, we saw Auli'i take on the iconic role (and fins) of Ariel the mermaid, as well as star in the dearly departed TV show Rise. More notably, she provided the voice of Disney's popular Moana, cementing her as a Disney icon forevermore. We can't wait to see what she does with a meaty role like Jos in The Power, so to brush up on the story, we're going to go right ahead and request the book from the library.
