ASU football prediction: Sun Devils will win just 3 games under Kenny Dillingham in 2023

The Arizona State football team endured a 3-9 season in 2022, going just 2-7 in Pac-12 Conference play.

2023 won't be any better record-wise, according to an early record projection for the Sun Devils' season.

USA TODAY Sports' Ducks Wire recently took a look at ASU's schedule for the upcoming season and projected the team to go 3-9 overall and just 1-8 in the Pac-12 in Kenny Dillingham's first season as head coach.

Zachary Neel wrote of Arizona State's chances: "I have real confidence that Kenny Dillingham is going to be able to turn things around at Arizona State and get them among the top half of schools in the Pac-12, but I don’t think it’s going to happen in his first year in Tempe. The Sun Devils are lacking a lot of talent on the roster, and while Dillingham has found some nice additions in the transfer portal, I don’t think it will be enough to win them more than a few games. In the conference, I currently see ASU beating California, but losing every other game on the schedule."

Neel had ASU finishing in 10th place in the conference with California and Stanford the only schools worse than the Sun Devils.

Arizona State's 2023 schedule includes non-conference games against Southern Utah, Oklahoma State and Fresno State.

In Pac-12 play, ASU will host USC, Colorado, Washington State, Oregon and Arizona. It plays at California, Washington and UCLA.

Ducks Wire isn't the only site predicting another difficult season for the Sun Devils, as Arizona State transitions under Dillingham.

Athlon Sports also has ASU No. 10 in its early ranking of teams in the conference for 2023.

Steven Lassan wrote: "The roster in Tempe will look a lot different after new coach Kenny Dillingham brought in more than 20 transfers from the portalAnd help is needed right away on both sides of the ball after a 3-9 mark in '22. Although the Sun Devils enter the season with significant question marks, Dillingham (an Arizona State graduate) is a good hire and his background on offense should show right away. Notre Dame transfer Drew Pyne could start at quarterback, and there are weapons on the outside with tight end Jalin Conyers and receiver Elijhah Badger returning (and also help from the portal). A handful of transfers are needed to push for time right away on defense. The Sun Devils gave up 6.4 yards per play in Pac-12 contests and must replace the top four tacklers from last season, including linebackers Kyle Soelle and Merlin Robertson."
