Ashton Kutcher is Optimistic About Our Generative AI Future
ChatGPT, AI-generated selfies, and deepfakes, oh my! If these things sound a little bit scary to you, you're not alone. Who can we turn to in this confusing era where research papers, impressionist paintings, and even TV shows can be rendered by AI? Ashton Kutcher, of course. As part of the actor's digital cover story with Esquire, he answered our burning questions about what he thinks will be the next big thing in tech. It's Generative AI, apparently. Thankfully, Kutcher's take on our burgeoning era of artificial inundation left us with a bit of hope.
"We're all concerned that this is going to eliminate jobs," Kutcher said. "Somebody said to me a long time ago that [because of] software, you're either going to have a job telling computers what to do or being told what to do by computers. So we all get to decide in our lives which people we are going to be. AI will replace some jobs, but we will also be able to ask AI, 'What job should I be doing?'"
Kutcher believes that AI will supplement our lives just as other forms of new-and-improved tech have done in the past. Kutcher has even posed his own questions to AI, once asking, "What are the seven things I can do to create resilient children?" Turns out, he found it pretty damn helpful. So maybe knowing how to use AI skillfully will be our saving grace as a society. Kutcher left us with something a bit more promising to chew on: "I believe we are going to move to an economy of kindness. because intelligence will become commoditized by AI. Thus the most valuable thing you can be as a human being is kind."
Oh, sweet Ashton. We sure hope so.
