Ashley Park & Stephanie Hsu Play Besties In Upcoming Comedy, Joy Ride
It’s the comedy crew we all want to see.
Emily In Paris star Ashley Park and Oscar nominee Stephanie Hsu (Everything Everywhere All At Once) teamed up to star as the leads in an upcoming comedic movie, Joy Ride. The pair also star alongside comedians Sabrina Wu and Sherry Cola.
The trailer for Joy Ride dropped yesterday, while the film premiered for the first time at SXSW the same day. The movie's trailer depicts Hsu and Park as best friends who go on a journey to find Park’s character’s birth parents in China. They pick up Wu and Cola’s characters along the way, and the four seem to get involved in a number of hijinks throughout their journey while chaos inevitably ensues.
At one point, the four get mixed up with a drug dealer while riding on a bullet train through the Chinese countryside.
The movie's tone is giving Hangover meets Booksmart and is reminiscent of raucous 2010s-era comedies — which makes sense since Seth Rogen’s production company, Point Grey Pictures, backed the film. Rogen is also credited as a producer.
While the comedy is centered around a wild road trip between four friends, the theme seems to come back to Park and Hsu’s close bond and will likely show many heartfelt moments — along with hysterical shenanigans.
Joy Ride was directed by Crazy Rich Asians co-writer Adele Lim — her directorial debut. The film will be released in theaters on July 7, 2023.
