Ariana Grande is Suing Forever 21 for $10 Million

Another day, another bit of controversial news about Forever 21. The latest involves singer Ariana Grande, who is suing the fashion retailer to a tune of $10 million for allegedly using photos of her likeness.

Here’s what she says happened, according to court documents that Ariana filed in California yesterday: Ariana and Forever 21 were in talks about a partnership, but the deal supposedly fell through because the brand did not agree to ”pay the fair market value for a celebrity of Ms. Grande’s stature.” That’s a nice way of saying that Forever 21 wouldn’t pay Ariana as much as she wanted. Either way, the deal fell through entirely.

According to court documents, Forever 21 found a super sketchy workaround. The lawsuit claims that the brand used photos of her for an “unauthorized marketing campaign” and even hired a model that looks strikingly similar to Ariana herself. In one of the photos of said model, she is wearing a pink pom-pom headpiece similar to the one that Grande wore in her “7 Rings” music video. The retailer captioned the photo, in part, “Gee thanks, just bought it,” according to court documents. The "unauthorized marketing campaign" in question allegedly ran on Forever 21's social media accounts in January and February of this year.

Per my own internet sleuthing, it seems that Forever 21 has since deleted the images in question from their Instagram account—but amazingly, it’s still live on their Facebook page. Fortunately for all of us though, screenshots live on forever. Here are the screenshot images making the rounds on the internet:

Ariana has filed a demand for a jury trial, so we’ll have to wait and see how this one plays out. Unfortunately, this lawsuit is also pretty bad timing for the retailer, considering that in recent weeks there have been reports that the brand may potentially be filing for bankruptcy. Double yikes.
