Ariana Grande Responds to Fan Who Doesn't Approve of New Song "Pete"

"If my openness in my work isn't for you, that's OK."

Ariana Grande is famously tight with her fans, but that doesn't mean she's always interested in their opinions on her relationship with Pete Davidson.

On Thursday, the 25-year-old musician released the track names for all of the songs on her forthcoming album, Sweetener, and one in particular stood out. While fans already knew about "No Tears Left to Cry," "The Light Is Coming," and "God Is a Woman," 12 new song titles were confirmed, including "Better Off," "Blazed, " "Borderline," "Breathin," "Everytime," "Get Well Soon," "Goodnight N Go," "Pete," "Raindrops," "REM," "Successful," and "Sweetener," according to E!.

Although Ariana already had revealed in June that one of the songs would be named "Pete," the "official" confirmation of the track title on Thursday still managed to catch some flak from Ariana's fans. One in particular criticized the singer, via Instagram comment, for releasing a song about her very new romance, and Ariana was quick to clap back.

"He's my fiancé. This is my album," she wrote, per E!. "I'm an honest and emotional artist and human being and if my openness in my work isn't for you, that's OK; I won't be offended. Still wishing y'all all the love in the world."

Although she wanted to be clear about her stance on her authority to decide what is or isn't included in her music, she still thanked the same commenter for their kind words about some of the other tracks. "These three are really beautiful," she wrote. "I know I said I don't have favorites but these and 'R.E.M.' are really up there."

Many of Ariana's fans are 100% on board with her relationship, though. One user said they were excited for "Pete" because "their love is so true and kind." Ariana wrote back personally, saying, "Thanks. It's a special song about the most special human being I've ever met" and called the song "sick," according to E!.

The singer has also previously had to defend the song choice. Last month, after a Twitter user called her decision "dumb," Ariana had some stronger words for the troll, writing, "forreal. the truth is ☕️ i been the f*ck thru it and life’s too short to be cryptic n sh*t about something as beautiful as this love I’m in. so ǝʇǝԀ it is."

The couple, who surprised everyone by getting engaged just a few short weeks into their relationship, have not previously been shy about communicating how in love they are with each other, whether it be through Instagram comments, matching tattoos, or, now, through Ariana's music.
