The first three episodes of the new Apple TV+ series Extrapolation premiered today on the streaming platform. The eight-episode season—which features some of the biggest names in entertainment, like Meryl Streep, Kit Harington, David Schwimmer, Yara Shahidi and more—puts the viewer into a world where the planet is crumbling beneath our feet. With its massive star power leading the narrative, it begs the question: Is it really worth the watch?

Keep reading for an honest review of Extrapolation.

The first episode takes place in the year 2037, and the planet is on the brink of collapse. In a live hologram broadcast, a young environmental activist (played by Shahidi) is desperately trying to plead with government officials around the world to take action on the rapid rise in sea levels and the numerous forest fires erupting across the globe.

In a matter of seconds, we are bombarded with live footage from around the world, displaying the devastating effects global warming is having on society. Although the use of the CNN-esque broadcasts and natural disaster footage can be a little excessive at times, it does a great job of depicting the severity of the situation.

In the span of forty-nine minutes (and thirty-nine seconds to be exact), we’re introduced to a total of six characters. (FYI, the story is told from the perspective of eight different characters.) The only problem is the first episode seems to drag on wayyyy too long. This is slightly expected because the writers are trying to develop the characters. But the story jumps from one person to another so quickly that it makes it hard for us to get to know the characters and form a connection with them.

Thankfully, the first episode of Extrapolation is saved by its second half—and boy, does it get good.

The entire cast delivers stellar performances, but there is one star who really steals the show: Daveed Diggs, who you might recognize from the award-winning Broadway musical, Hamilton. In one scene, the 41-year-old actor gives a powerful and raw performance that deserves all the applause.

If the rest of the series is anything like the final moments of the first episode, then Extrapolation is gearing up to be an entertaining watch for sure. Yes, the series has a powerhouse cast, but it also has a powerful message that can’t be ignored.

The first three episodes of the limited series are streaming now on Apple TV+. New episodes will premiere on the streaming platform every Friday until the finale debuts on April 21.
