The first images from The Handmaid's Tale Season 2 have been released, and they are every bit as beautiful and frightening and visually stunning as you'd hope. As showrunner Bruce Miller has already promised, Season 2 will expand the world of Gilead from the first season, and will follow Emily (Alexis Bledel) into the colonies, Moira (Samira Wiley) into her new life as a refugee in Canada, and June (Elisabeth Moss) into an unknown new chapter, now that she is both pregnant and in government custody.

The new images offer our first look at a handmaid's funeral in Gilead, as well as a preview of the colonies - the radioactive wasteland where those convicted of crimes are sent to work themselves to death. "Everything from the design of their costumes to the way they look is so chilling,” Miller told EW of the funeral scene. "These scenes that are so beautiful, while set in such a terrible place, provide the kind of contrast that makes me happy.”

Moss whetted our appetites for the season two premiere when she told EW: "There is literally no way that anyone can guess what happens. You can try, but you won’t do it... We have no intention of doing anything else than being even more balls to the wall than we were in Season 1."

Per Hulu's official synopsis, Season 2 is "shaped by Offred’s pregnancy and her ongoing fight to free her future child from the dystopian horrors of Gilead. 'Gilead is within you' is a favorite saying of Aunt Lydia. In Season 2, Offred and all our characters will fight against - or succumb to - this dark truth."

The Handmaid's Tale Season 2 launches on Hulu in April.
