Just this past May, Deadliest Catch fans were saddened by the sudden passing of fisherman Blake Painter, who appeared on the Discovery Channel show during season 3. Now, another cast member is battling a scary illness.
On a recent episode of Deadliest Catch, Captain Keith Colburn of the FV Wizard revealed that he's going to miss the upcoming season of bairdi crab fishing due to a serious bacterial infection in his spine, Yahoo! reports. The infection, called osteomyelitis, causes inflammation of the bone, and generally affects the bones in the legs, arms, or spine.
Symptoms include fever, swelling, and pain in the area of the infection, and can lead to bone death or septic arthritis-or as Colburn succinctly put it, "My back is all f***ed up." The captain further revealed that two of his vertebrae look like someone poured battery acid on them.
To combat the infection, the captain has to inject antibiotics intravenously everyday, which has left him unable to captain a fishing vessel. He decided to appoint his brother, Monte, as the new captain of the Wizard, and now Monte is tasked with bringing in 155,000 pounds of bairdi crab in just one week.
Monte, also known as "Mouse," must balance his fears about his older brother's illness with his new duties as captain. "You know, my brother’s health, critical as it is, it’s not something I’m really in the position to even think about," he said. "These guys are counting on me to go out and fill those tanks with crab, and it ain’t going to be easy."
Deadliest Catch airs Tuesdays at 9 p.m. on the Discovery Channel.
