A$AP Rocky is facing up to two years in Swedish prison for assault charges, despite Trump and other celebs coming to his defense.
The rapper is facing assault charges from Swedish prosecutors after Trump’s apparent bid to bring him home failed. He has been in Swedish custody since July 3 as a result of a June 30 fight in Stockholm.
Video released by TMZ seemed to show A$AP Rocky tossing another man to the ground. Rocky’s lawyers say the rapper acted in self-defense. His case made national headlines on July 19 when Trump announced he would intervene on A$AP Rocky’s behalf to the Swedish prime minster.
“Just spoke to Kanye West about his friend A$AP Rocky’s incarceration,” Trump tweeted. “I will be calling the very talented Prime Minister of Sweden to see what we can do about helping A$SP Rocky. So many people would like to see this quickly resolved!”
But according to a statement from the Prime Minister’s office to the New York Times, Trump’s negotiations didn’t work.
“In Sweden everyone is equal before the law…the government cannot and will not attempt to influence the legal proceedings,” Swedish Press Secretary Toni Eriksson stated.
A$AP Rocky is reportedly facing up to two years in prison and a fine. His trial is set to begin next week.
