Chicago Cubs first baseman Anthony Rizzo was deeply affected by the Marjory Stoneman Douglas school shooting in February. Rizzo grew up in Florida, attended Stoneman Douglas for high school and was a member of the school’s baseball team.

After the shooting, Rizzo was determined to help his community. He gave an emotional speech at a school vigil, called out people who attacked survivors of the shooting and honored the victims by wearing shirts before the Cubs’ first regular season game.

Rizzo continued to show his support for the school by lending his voice to an MLB Network feature on the Stoneman Douglas baseball team.

There were initially some questions about whether the team should cancel its season in the wake of the shooting, but the players were determined to play as a tribute to those who were killed.

The Marjory Stoneman Douglas baseball team overcame a tough start to make it all the way to Regional Finals. They even had the opportunity to play a game at Marlins Park.

Rizzo graduated from Stoneman Douglas in 2007. His baseball jersey was retired by the school in 2016.
