If you’re a fan of royal weddings, you’re in luck: Another regal affair is expected to take place next year. Princes Märtha Louise of Norway announced on September 13, 2023, via Instagram that she is planning to tie the knot with Durek Verrett on August 31, 2024. Martha, the oldest daughter of King Harald V and Queen Sonja, and Verrett, an American alternative therapist and self-proclaimed shaman, will say “I do” at the historic Hotel Union Geiranger in Norway.
According to the statement, Geiranger is known for its mountains and fjords, which are long, narrow inlets with steep cliffs created by glaciers. The United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization deemed the village a World Heritage Site, meaning it has cultural or physical significance. In her caption, Märtha explained that they chose the locale because it “represents Norway's rich culture and natural beauty.” “We are incredibly happy to be able to celebrate our love in Geiranger's beautiful surroundings,” the princess wrote. “It means a lot to us to gather our loved ones in a place that is so rich in history and intense nature experiences. Geiranger is the perfect place to embrace our love.”

In addition to the update, Märtha, who is related to Queen Victoria of Britain, posted a portrait of herself and her fiancé, which was captured by Sara Abraham. In the photo, the princess is dressed in a flowy white garment with her arm draped across Verrett, who is wearing a pink blazer. Verrett also shared the same photo and message on his own Instagram page. In his post, the shaman referred to his fiancée as “my beloved Princess Märtha Louise.”
On June 7, 2022, the Norwegian princess told her Instagram followers that she and Verret had become engaged. “I am so happy to announce that I am engaged to Shaman Durek, the one who makes my heart skip, the one who sees me and acknowledges me from my highest potential, who makes me laugh and who I can be vulnerable with,” she wrote in her caption. “Love transcends and makes us grow. And I am so happy to continue to grow with this beautiful man.” She also uploaded a photo of herself and her fiancé looking into one another’s eyes, which was taken by Babak Golkar and Max Bouchard.
Verrett shared the same photo on his own Instagram account, along with the caption, “She said YES! When you know you know. There is nothing better than having clarity as a man that the woman that stands in front of you is the one. Princess Märtha Louise is the love of my life.” According to Billed Bladet, the American shaman asked the king and queen for permission before popping the question. “I’m very old-fashioned in the way I do things,” he explained. “Therefore, I sat down with King Harald and Queen Sonja and asked for their daughter's hand in marriage. If they had said no, I would not have gone ahead with it. I do things in an honorable and respectful way.”
The couple first went public with their relationship in May 2019. The princess wrote a heartfelt message, giving insight into their strong connection. “When you meet your twin flame, you know,” she said. “I have been lucky enough to have met mine. @shamandurek has changed my life, like he does with so many. He has made me realize that unconditional love actually exists here on this planet. He embraces all of me without question or fear. He makes me laugh more than anyone, has the most profound wisdom to share and all the bits in between from the diversity of his being.”

Although the bride-to-be was born a princess, the Royal House of Norway announced in November 2022 that Märtha would be stepping away from her royal role. The palace said she made the decision, so she could pursue other interests, but she will retain her “princess” title. She is also welcome at family events, per the statement.
