Another Bomb Cyclone Hit the U.S. This Week, So Winter Has Officially Arrived
A Nor'easter slammed parts of the United States on Wednesday.
The storm system shifted into a bomb cyclone overnight, and the effects will be felt through Friday.
For those who have enjoyed a relatively mild fall season so far, we're sorry to say that the warm weather is coming to an end.
Last week, a "historic" snowstorm slammed cities in the North Central United States, resulting in places like Denver experiencing a shift from autumn to winter literally overnight.
While the East Coast largely avoided the harsh temperature drop and heavy snowfall, the winds have shifted this week.
According to the Washington Post, a "wind-packed and waterlogged bomb cyclone" took shape along the Eastern Seaboard on Wednesday evening into Thursday, slamming the coastline with heavy rain and gusts up to 90 mph. ABC reports that it also left more than half a million people without power.
The technical term meteorologists use for this weather nightmare is "bombogenesis," which refers to a rapid drop in atmospheric pressure as a storm intensifies. If a storm's central pressure drops 24 millibars or more in 24 hours, it is classified as a "weather bomb." Generally, lower air pressure signifies a stronger storm. In this case, the Nor'Easter boasted a 34-millibar drop in just 22 hours.

While the worst of it is over, the effects of this bomb cyclone will be felt through Friday. People in the Northeast can continue to expect high winds, which will cause numerous flight delays and cancellations throughout the region. Luckily, the storm won't result in much snow (unless you live in upstate New York).
