’Tis the season to be jolly—and to start getting worried about holiday gifting. What does one buy for a mother-in-law? Is it ever okay to regift? And what’s a great non-gift gift for people with too many things already? Looking ahead to the yuletide, our latest Go Ask Anna handles all things giving, getting, and entertaining this winter. You might want to write some of this down.
The first question comes care of one Jessica Biel: What’s one of the coolest parties that Anna’s ever hosted, but nobody knows about? Her answer—besides a pre-Met Gala dinner at her home in 2009, attended by Biel, her husband Justin Timberlake, and Marc Jacobs—was a grand, Great Gatsby–themed soiree on Long Island in honor of Vogue’s Hamish Bowles. As is often the case, what made the party particularly memorable was something nobody could plan: a perfectly full moon rising over the water.
Where holiday shopping is concerned, our editor in chief recommends, as a non-gift, tickets to the theatre—or, for those so inclined, a private museum tour. But if you’re really at a loss, rather than picking something on the fly, go for a charitable donation. The very worst gifts, Wintour proclaims, are the least thoughtful ones.
Still, it’s perfectly possible to regift without falling into that trap, as long as you’re transparent about it. As Wintour sagely suggests, “Just say, ‘Somebody sent this to me, and I thought that it was perfect for you.’” There you have it—holiday shopping made easy.
