Angular Sunglasses Are Fast Becoming the Accessory of the Summer

Cast your mind back to two weeks ago. Overcast skies dampened our already downtrodden moods; torrential rain forced umbrellas into our grasp, hinting that anoraks and waterproof hoods would be the only attire we’d need for the doomed gray months ahead. Look at us now! The world is drenched in sunshine. And with the warm weather, Hailey Bieber’s recent stream of Instagram posts, taken in sunny L.A., now serve as inspiration for the rest of us.

Like Hailey, we can all relish the wonderful sunshine and embrace the numerous spring/summer trends brought to light last September. Instead of umbrellas, sunglasses are now our weather-bearing weapons of choice – and the It-girls have already cemented the frame shape set to be big this summer. Angular, sculptural shades have been doing the rounds among the street-style set, and happily, the universally flattering silhouette suits every face shape.

Linda Farrow’s collab with Milanese fashion house The Attico – another brand name that’s frequently cropped up in our feeds thanks to its cult disco-ready Devon mules – has been earmarked as the prime supplier of sculptural shades. Farrow’s son, Simon Jablon, revived the brand in 2003 following a 20-year hiatus, catapulting it into the limelight as the port of call for vintage-inspired frames. His decision to team up with The Attico founders Giorgia Tordini and Gilda Ambrosio is a serious power move: designs created during their partnership have gone through multiple restocks. Hailey has favored the retro-feel Gigis, in both black and cherry-red, in addition to the sharp-edged Marfas – which have also been worn by Dua Lipa. Irina Shayk is another fan of the range, having bookmarked the Gigis as her favorite style.

British independent label Dmy by Dmy is another popular provider of nostalgic frames. Hailey, Irina and Kendall Jenner have various timeless brand styles in their repertoires – the latter has sported the slimline Preston and square, oversized Lucas, both of which are handcrafted from Italian acetate.

And then, of course, there’s Rihanna, the undisputed queen of statement sunnies. Judging by the sheer number of styles the singer has worn in the past year alone, it can only be assumed that she has a dedicated closet for her statement shades. Trendy rectangular sunnies are among her most cherished, including Kuboraum’s taupe X5s, searingly bright neon iterations from Gucci, and a generous helping of styles from her very own Fenty line.
