Angelina Jolie Has the Secret to a Perfect Red Lip For Party Season

Angelina Jolie's beauty signature is by now well-known to be a statement lip. And last night at the European premiere of her new film Maleficent: Mistress of Evil in London, the Oscar-winning actress punctuated her famously full pout with a striking crimson lip shade as she strode down the red carpet in a white Ralph & Russo Couture gown with sharp shoulder pads, gold bustier detail, and a diaphanous cape.

According to her makeup artist Matin, Jolie's look for the evening hinged on three things: Making her skin glow, adding a shock of color on the mouth, and using as many products from British brands as possible in the spirit of keeping "keep it local," he says. To start, Matin supercharged Jolie's complexion with Emma Hardie's Midas Touch Serum Duo, then blended on a silky, lightweight foundation with a damp Beautyblender, using Danessa Myricks Dew Wet Balm to strobe the temples, brow bones, and cheekbones to light-catching effect.

For the pièce de résistance of Jolie's look, Matin traced her mouth with Laura Mercier's Longwear Lip Liner in deep crimson Ruby, then layered on Code 8's Matte Velour Longwear Lipstick straight from the bullet in blue-red Burlington Kisses. "It's the easiest kind of red to wear because warmer reds can be tricky with different skin tones and make the teeth looks less white," he explains. The secret to Jolie's flawless finish? Refining the edges with concealer and a tapered-head brush, says Matin. As party season approaches, the takeaway is clear: You can't go wrong with a time-honored, universally flattering red lip.
