Andy Chaves of modern rock band Katastro dies at 32 in car accident that killed 2 others

Andy Chaves of Tempe-based modern rockers Katastro died in a car accident with two other people early Thursday morning on Pacific Coast Highway in Newport Beach, California.

Chaves was 32.

His bandmates shared the news in an Instagram post: "We are completely devastated to have to announce the loss of our brother and singer Andy Chaves. Please respect the privacy of Andy's family and the members of the band as we all begin to process this. Thank you for the love and support."

Among the musical friends responding to their post were singer-guitarist Dustin Bushnell of Dirty Heads, who wrote "Love you guys. If you need anything at all I’m here for you.."

Sublime with Rome also responded, saying "Our prayers go out to you."

According to the Newport Beach Police, as reported by thepier.org and the Journal-Courier, a car carrying three people traveling on the PCH hit a curb and slammed into roadwork construction equipment at approximately 12:45 a.m.

All three passengers died on the scene.

The other two passengers, as reported by the outlets, were identified as Crystal McCallum, 34, and Wayne Walter Swanson Jr., 40.

The outlets also reported that three roadworkers who were standing nearby when the collision occurred were taken to a hospital with minor injuries.

Formed in 2007 and also featuring Andrew Stravers, Tanner Riccio and Ryan Weddle, Katastro celebrated the release of "Sucker," their latest collection of hip-hop-flavored modern rock, with two release shows at the Marquee Theatre in June of 2021.

The album was preceded by “The Way I Feel,” a summer jam that turned up on a number of taste-making Spotify playlists including The New Alt, New Noise, PopRox and Beach Vibes.

It's been the most-streamed song on Spotify from "Sucker," with just shy of 3 million plays. Their most-streamed song on Spotify, 2016's "Flow," has over 18 million plays.

They were supposed to spend the summer on the road with Iration and Atmosphere.
