The Flattering ‘Icy’ Trend That’s Heating Up Red Carpets

Everyone has been talking about the icy blonde bob this season; from Jennifer Lawrence to Taylor Swift, this statement style has shown up on some of the biggest trendsetters in Hollywood.

But this week, celebs have been channeling a subtler spin on “icy” beauty with cool, shimmery eye makeup.

From a soft silvery lid on Chloë Grace Moretz to a sparkly two-toned blue on Kirsten Dunst and a sheer, glittery gunmetal on Blake Lively, it’s been all about ice on the red carpet.

“With the focus on the eyes, you can keep the rest of the face natural and fuss-free,” says celebrity makeup artist Noel Nichols. “Bringing light tones to the inner corners of the eyes and lids, really makes the eyes pop and is easy for everyone to pull off.”

Chloë, Blake and Kirsten all pair their eye makeup with a universally-flattering light pink lip and subtle wash of blush to keep the look modern. “Try a creamy Bite Beauty Amuse Bouche Lipstick ($26), which can just be pressed into the lips for a sheer application,” says Nichols. “Souffle works for light skin tones, and Fig for deeper skin tones. Then swipe Fiona Stiles Beauty Soft Cheek Veil in ‘Sweetwater’ ($20) across cheeks for a gorgeous wash of color.”

Now, for those peepers. If you want a soft and natural glow like Chloe’s, Nichols says to use a silvery-taupe cream shadow like Laura Mercier Caviar Stick Eye Color in “Khaki” ($29) from lashes to crease, blending in an upwards direction. “Then press an icy-grey loose shimmer powder onto the center of lids, and wash a bit into the inner corner of the eye to brighten,” Nichols says, suggesting Kevyn Aucoin The Loose Shimmer Shadow in “Selenite” ($29). “To keep the wide-eyed look, skip the liner. Just curl your lashes and finish with mascara.” Lancome Grandiose Wide-Angle Fan-Effect Mascara ($32) should do the trick.

For a natural, effortless glam like Blake’s sheer gunmetal eye, celebrity makeup artist Lisa Chamberlain says to use a shimmery neutral shadow like MAC’s “Retrospeck” ($16) all over the eyelid. “Bring it up to the brow bone, swept across the eye-duct area and even below the lower lash line,” she tells Yahoo Beauty. “This will really make the eyes sparkle and pop.” For that icy silver finish, smoke up the eyelid crease with with NYX Hot Singles Eye Shadow in “Smoke and Mirrors” ($4.50). If you want a more for a more icy blue punch, use NYX Prismatic Shadow in “Blue Jeans” ($6). “Finish off with MAC Haute & Naughty Too Black Lash ($22), applying a few coats to both top and bottom lashes,” says Chamberlain.

To get Kirsten’s multi-toned metallic blue eye, Nichols says to first line eyes on top and bottom with a gray long-wear cream pencil like Marc Jacobs Beauty Highliner Gel Eye Crayon in (Stone)Fox 58 ($25). Next, you want to shade the eye with a blue palette, like Dior 5 Couleurs Eyeshadow in “Carre Bleu” ($62) or Smashbox Photo Op Eye Shadow Trio in “Skybox” ($28). “Use the shimmery gray-blue color to set the pencil, then smoke out the outer corners with the darkest charcoal-blue color,” says Nichols. “To balance the cool tones of this smokey eye, I’ll use a touch of my matte blush in the crease, like NARS Blush in ‘Mata Hari’ ($30), and then top with Diorshow Mascara ($27.50).”

So, now you know. If you just can’t commit to that platinum-blonde dye job currently making headlines, there’s another icy beauty trend you can adopt this season — and just for a night.
