“It’s empowering,” Schumer said. “It’s like you get a piece of yourself back, but it is hard. I’m just so fortunate, you know? ‘Cause a lot of people have it a lot harder.”

Schumer is deeply aware of her privilege, but to be fair, she had a particularly nightmarish pregnancy, suffering from hyperemesis gravidarum that landed her in the hospital for IV fluids. She documented the pregnancy with admirable candor and humor — and it’s no wonder that she’s feeling empowered as she settles into motherhood and returns to her career.
Schumer’s currently filming a new unnamed project, as well as recording new episodes of her Spotify podcast Amy Schumer Presents: 3 Girls, 1 Keith, which is entering its fourth season.
The actor and comedian said that being a mother has shifted her focus to issues such as maternal mortality, maternity care, and parental leave.
“Christy Turlington [Burns] started this charity called Every Mother Counts and they raise money to help women have a midwife or doula with them when they give birth. Because sometimes, they’re just at home by themselves,” the I Feel Pretty star said.
“It’s real grim,” she continued. “I have so much privilege, and it was still so hard for me to go back to work.” Recently Schumer expressed that she had had major trepidations about returning to work after having baby Gene, despite having the help of husband Chris Fischer.
“I’m feeling strong and good and like I’m still a human being with interests and ambitions and goals I’m excited to reach,” Schumer wrote in an Instagram post on Oct. 5. “It’s felt good to be back at work… A couple days I’ve cried from missing him. But it’s mostly good to be back and the breaks energize me to be a better mom and appreciate our time even more. I have it a lot easier than many people but I wanted to share my experience.”
It looks like Gene is enjoying all the perks of having a mom who works outside of the house, too, judging from this Oct. 15 Instagram video post on Schumer’s feed, captioned, “Set visit for a million kisses”:
We’re eager to see more of Gene — and eager to hear more from the no-B.S. Schumer as she trains her razor-sharp wit on the issues and experiences that she’s contemplating as Amy v. 2.0.
