American Idol champion Just Sam is sharing her thoughts on the 2021 competition.

The vocalist, who came in first place during the 2020 season, recently sat down with Talent Recap to give an update on what she's been up to since being crowned the ABC singing show's winner. The interview also touched on what Sam thinks about this year's comeback twist, where American Idol producers gave 10 of last year's contestants the chance to earn the final spot in the top 10 of 2021.

"Juicy it was definitely juicy," Sam said. "Just bringing back Arthur Gunn, Faith Becnel, and Cyniah [Elise]. That’s juicy. That’s really good stuff right there. That’s great for television."

At the time of the interview, Arthur hadn't been voted through by the fans yet to join this year's competitors. But when asked who she thought would make it through to the top 10, Sam rightfully predicted that it would be Arthur.

"Arthur Gunn, not because of anything personal, but because of how it went last year," she said. "We were neck and neck ... If he made it to [the] top two, then he still has his top-two fans."

Despite making it clear that she's a fan of all the contestants, Sam hesitantly admitted to Talent Recap that she believes Arthur would win this year. But one week later, she announced on her Instagram Stories that she had changed her mind.

"I’m sorry but I really don’t want Arthur to win this year," Sam wrote via an Instagram Story Slide tagging Talent Recap. "I was rooting for him last year..but this year I’m rooting for Willie Spence or I just hope that a newer contestant wins now that the comeback results are in."

She continued: "Maybe if someone who didn't make [it] to the top 5 came back instead, I'd feel better about all of this. Anyways... I said what I said."

While we're not sure what prompted Sam to speak out, we now know that she's rooting for Willie to come out on top. What it sounds like, though, is that perhaps Sam has mixed feelings about Arthur returning to the show after already coming in second place. As expressed online, some American Idol viewers feel Arthur's participation is "not fair" to those currently competing and that his established fan base could give him an unfair advantage. That said, no one is disputing Arthur's incredible talent.

Time will tell if Sam further explains her point of view on social media. But if she is truly conflicted about Arthur taking another contestant's spot, she certainly isn't the only Idol fan to have that opinion. Either way, we're happy to hear that Sam has some upcoming music in the works after releasing her first solo single called Africando in March.
