Following the murder of George Floyd on May 25, American Idol winner Just Sam has been protesting and expressing her support of the Black Lives Matter movement on social media. Part of the singer's advocacy included posting a personal Instagram that detailed her own experiences with a police officer as a Black female.

Though it's not clear when the Instagram photo was taken, the 21-year-old vocalist recalled that at the time she posed for the picture, she "had a fear of cops" and worried that she would "end up like my mother ... in jail."

"At this point in my life, I had already had an experience where a cop tried to arrest me at 13/14 years old for no reason and told me that he would spit in my face while stepping on my head to hold me down," Just Sam wrote. "I was crying and very afraid and of course I screamed for my grandmother, but they didn’t care because I was black and in the projects."

She continued: "This photo was after having some of the WORSE run ins with cops. This photo was taken after years of seeing my friends and family hurt by cops."

Later on in the caption, Just Sam shared that she was the only female in the New York City Police Department's Community Affairs Bureau Crime Prevention program. Per the NYPD website, the Crime Prevention division aims to "inform community members and local businesses about crime trends and threats and works with them on preventative measures and security."

"I was fortunate to be apart [sic] of a team that wanted to help kids like me instead of beating and arresting us," she said while discussing her time working with the NYPD. "Thank you to all the cops out there that are actually trying! Thank you to the cops that were good before we asked them to be. 🙏🏾❤️"

In response to Just Sam's post, the singer's fans posted supportive words in the comments section. "This is so powerful and honest. Thank you for sharing! 💜," one fan wrote. "America’s IDOL ❤️," another said. A different fan acknowledged, "👏👏 So glad that things are looking better but we still have a long ways to go ❤️."
