'American Idol' Fans Are "Done" With the Show After the “Huge Mistake" Made in the Top 10 Vote

From Good Housekeeping

  • American Idol season 3 (18th overall) airs Sunday nights on ABC at 8 p.m. ET.

  • Due to the coronavirus pandemic, contestants and judges Katy Perry, Luke Bryan, and Lionel Richie are continuing the show from their homes.

  • Last Sunday, Idol fans were forced to say goodbye to powerhouse Lauren Spencer-Smith.

Voting for the 2020 season of American Idol has only just begun and already a large portion of the Idol Twitter community is not happy. Why, you ask? Many were pretty upset when Top 20 contestant Lauren Spencer-Smith wasn't put through to the Top 10 — and judges Katy Perry, Luke Bryan, and Lionel Richie chose not to save her.

The online outrage began following Sunday night's perform-at-home episode, where America cut the Top 20 contestant list in half. While many fan favorites made it through — including Arthur Gunn, Dillon James, Just Sam, and Francisco Martin — it was a bummer to say goodbye to so many talented artists, including Lauren.

Although Lauren sailed her way through the audition, Hollywood Week, and Hawaii showcase rounds, she didn't quite garner enough votes to crack the Top 10 after her powerful take on Jessie J's hit "Momma Knows Best!"

But according to her fans, America made a "huge mistake" letting her go. Moreover, fans think Katy, Luke, and Lionel misjudged using their one-time save on eliminated contestant Makayla Phillips instead of Lauren. All in all, a lot of feelings came out on Twitter.

Despite the disappointment of not moving on, Lauren was nothing but gracious after her elimination. She took to Instagram after Sunday night's show to thank her fans for voting and cheering her on.

"It is overwhelming how many kind and supportive comments I have received you guys are amazing❤️I love you all!!!," she captioned her post. "I’m excited for the future and to continue pursuing music, I love singing and music & I would never give up!!"

Though it's a bummer to see Lauren go on this year's Idol, there is still so much exciting competition coming up in the next few weeks. On May 3, the Top 10 (or technically, since Makayla is still on, the "Top 11") will once again perform from their homes for a chance to move on. From there, more and more contestants will be eliminated until the very best make it to the season 3 finale on May 17.

With Lauren gone now, it's really anyone's game. So, in conclusion, if you still have a favorite left on Idol this year, it's never been more important to keep voting them through. It's allll up to you now.
