  • American Girl is re-releasing some of its original dolls in honor of the brand's 35th anniversary.

  • There will be six dolls from the earliest days of the line making their return.

  • Dolls will cost $150 at American Girl starting in May 2021.

American Girl Doll of the Year Kira is caring and cool. Historical '80s doll Courtney is awesome to the max. But, if you're a parent of a certain age (ahem), you'll always have a soft spot for the original lineup of American Girl dolls, from the pioneering Kirsten to the courageous Addy.

If those millennial parents didn't hang on to their original Mollys, they can ditch the regrets now. (And if you kept yours in good condition, good for you, because original American Girl dolls are a prime example of retro toys that are worth a lot of money today.) That's because American Girl is re-releasing its first line of dolls in honor of the brand's 35th birthday. The six returning dolls include Samantha Parkington, Kirsten Larson, Molly McIntire, Felicity Merriman, Addy Walker and Josefina Montoya. All dolls will be available to purchase from the American Girl website in May for $150 (recommended for ages 8+). They represent historical time periods ranging from 1774 to 1944, but we're getting serious '80s and '90s vibes from all of them.

True fans will appreciate all the little details they're bringing back for the re-introduced dolls. The 18-inch dolls come with their original introductory outfits and accessories, and their paperback books come with the vintage covers. Basically, it's like buying your childhood all over again.

“As we celebrate this major milestone, we’re thrilled to recognize the very first generation of American girls who grew up with these beloved, original characters and made them the phenomenon they are today," Jamie Cygielman, General Manager of American Girl said in a press release.

"Knowing many of these women are now moms themselves, we look forward to creating special, multi-generational experiences for families via their shared love of the brand. We can’t wait to inspire and empower this next generation with even more relevant products, immersive experiences, and timeless stories.”

That's not all American Girl has in store for the year. They're planning on making it a year-long birthday bash, starting with a Facebook Live celebration on May 8 where participants can decorate cupcakes with the famed Magnolia Bakery and answer trivia questions based on the girls. (RSVPs are required.) There's also a book, Everything I Need to Know I Learned from American Girl, that some longtime fans will certainly relate to. (Molly's bit of wisdom? Turnips are terrible.) An album is coming out, too, with songs inspired by the dolls. Plus there are other goodies in store that they haven't announced yet. Until then, you can pore over the pictures and wonder what ever happened to the lace-trimmed hankie that came with your original Samantha.
