‘American Factory’ Named Best Documentary Feature at the 2020 Oscars

In 2018, it was Icarus. In 2019, it was Free Solo. And now, that Academy has crowned a brand-new winner.

The 92nd annual Academy Awards took place tonight at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles, and American Factory took home the highly coveted statuette for Best Documentary Feature.

The doc was up against The Cave, The Edge of Democracy, For Sama and Honeyland. Honeyland landed two nominations this year, once for this category and another for Best International Feature Film (previously known as Best Foreign Language Film). This is the only nod for American Factory, The Cave, The Edge of Democracy and For Sama.

At last year’s awards, Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi, Jimmy Chin, Evan Hayes and Shannon Dill took home the award for Free Solo. The doc, which follows rock climber Alex Honnold on his quest to perform a free solo climb of El Capitan in June 2017, beat out Hale County This Morning, This EveningMinding the GapOf Fathers and Sons and RBG.

The Academy first debuted the Best Documentary Feature category back in 1941. Previous winners include AmyCitizenfour20 Feet from StardomSearching for Sugar Man and Undefeated.

Congrats to everyone involved!
