Amal Clooney Is Bringing Spring’s Color-Blocking Trend into Fall

A prominent trend from this past month’s Spring 2020 collections was color-blocking. There were pinks with purples at Marc Jacobs and blues with crimsons at Victoria Beckham. The more unexpected the pairing, the better! That contrasting color story—where primary hues are clashed against each other in one single outfit—goes all the way back to the 1960s, when Yves Saint Laurent debuted his now-famous Mondrian dress, inspired by the Dutch painter. Since then, the look has ebbed in and out of fashion, having had a recent resurgence in the early 2010s. (Remember that Spring 2011 Gucci collection? Every celebrity and their mother was wearing it.) Now, Amal Clooney is bringing it back into the present once again.

Today, the paparazzi’s favorite human rights lawyer hit the streets of New York City in an ensemble that rejected fall’s muted colors. Instead, she wore a striped yellow trench coat, pairing a formfitting purple dress underneath it for a more sprightly styling job. Her color-blocked pieces made a strong statement so she went for some discreet black accessories like large sunglasses, pointed black pumps, and a sleek top-handle bag. This latest look fits in with Clooney’s approach to fall dressing: she’s been rocking power colors this season, making for a more vibrant autumn aesthetic. So, if the cooler weather has you reaching yet again for burgundy, black, or gray—maybe make like Amal and slip on a splashier shade instead.
