Alyssa Milano went to the Super Bowl last weekend, she wore cornrows — and no one could handle it. She’s not the first star, and she won’t be the last, to get called out for cultural appropriation, but the beauty of this moment was that the world’s collective response was embodied on camera.

So what’s a celeb to do when her mentions are filled with accusations of not only cultural appropriation, but also bad hair? She apologized — kinda.

When Twitter user BreetheVee wrote to Milano to inform her that her look was “supremely disrespectful,” Milano responded with the type of apology Real Housewives fans know all too well. “I’m so sorry you feel this way,” she wrote. “I celebrate and embrace differences with crazy amounts of respect and love.”

Of course, apologizing for how someone feels isn’t quite the same as apologizing for your actions, but it’s hard to tell if Milano is being shady or just plain bad at Twitter. Regardless, Bree went on in an attempt to educate Milano about what wearing a black hairstyle means. “Example. People love your look. You can go to work with that and no one would deem it “unprofessional,” she wrote. “We can’t wear our own natural afros to school or work without an issue, much less this style you have now.”

Milano may have been taking a page out of the Kardashian-Jenner hairstyle playbook. Almost every Kardashian sister has faced backlash for sporting cornrows or, in the case of Kylie Jenner, for claiming to have “started wigs.” It’s beneficial for everyone — especially if you’re in the spotlight — to do a bit of research before stepping out in a new-to-you look. That “trending” style may just have belonged to another culture for generations. No word yet on if Milano is sorry that black hairstyles “feel” disrespected.
