It Will Always Be Too Soon for This Kim Kardashian Robbery Costume

UPDATE: Since this article was first published on Tuesday, the “Parisian Heist Robbery Victim Kit” based on Kim Kardashian has been pulled from the site and is no longer for sale. The company, Costumeish.com, announced the decision on Tuesday via Twitter, writing, “Due to the extensive out-lash we have decided to remove the “Parisian Heist” costume from our website. We are sorry if it offended anyone.”

This is not the first time the online retailer has had to remove one of their costumes in poor taste either, pulling a Cecil the Lion onesie last year after a similar online backlash. Judging from the comments on the Parisian Heist tweet, however, it seems opinions on this particular costume’s offensiveness continues to be hotly debated. There appears to be an equal split between those users cheering its removal and pointing out its callousness and those bemoaning the current state of our PC culture robbing them of what would have otherwise been a “hilarious” Halloween look.

At the start of this month, Kim Kardashian experienced a frightening robbery in which she not only lost $10 million worth of jewelry, but also feared she would be raped, had her privacy violated, and was left understandably shaken and fearing for both her own security and that of her children. But, of course, Halloween is right around the corner and what would this festive holiday be without yet another offensive get-up based off of the reality TV family? Last year we had the questionable Caitlyn Jenner costume inspired by her Vanity Fair cover, and this year the most tasteless costume of the season has to go to the “Parisian Heist Robbery Victim Kit” currently being sold by Costumeish.com for $69.99.

The “Victim Kit” in question never refers to Kim specifically by name, but the overwhelming amount of details make it clear they could be referring to no one else. To start with, the costume comes with a “white short sexy robe,” a long black wig, oversize sunglasses, a fake gag, two feet of rope and a “$4 Million Dollar” ring.

If that’s not proof enough, the description for the product also pretty much says it all: “This Halloween it’s all about the #Hallomeme and who better than America’s goddess of all things glamorous ‘Parisian Heist Robbery Victim Costume?’ She has devoted her life to promoting American decadence, youth, and hedonism but all that flashy living caught up with her one night in Paris when armed men bound her, stole her jewelry and her peace of mind. On the most fundamental level, even if for some reason you cannot find it within yourself to sympathize with Kim’s horrifying experience specifically, this costume makes a mockery of any woman who has ever lived through physical or sexual assault, which according to statistics is the majority of us given that one in three women will experience violence in her lifetime. And besides, during a year when we are going through what might possibly be the most insane presidential election in history, don’t we already have enough unfortunate lady bashing going on?
