  • After swearing off makeup in 2016, Alicia Keys now sees it as a form of expression.

  • She shared her 10-minute makeup routine in a video with Allure.

  • She calls it a “light and easy,” “get ready real fast” routine.

In 2016, Alicia Keys very publicly swore off makeup because she felt she was becoming “addicted” to it. In other words, she didn’t feel comfortable without it on. That moment encouraged women everywhere to embrace their natural beauty, but since then, the “Underdog” singer has realized that makeup can absolutely be a form of expression.

“I’m not a slave to makeup. I’m not a slave to NOT wearing makeup either,” she told Allure in 2017. “I get to choose at [any] given moment. That’s my right.”

Now, the 40-year-old has found a welcome balance in her beauty regimen, and she recently shared the “light and easy” routine in a video with Allure. This is how Alicia Keys “get[s] ready real fast” when she chooses to wear makeup.

She starts by prepping her skin.

Keys gets her skin ready for makeup by first cleansing, and then misting with her own Keys Soul Care Reviving Aura Mist. “Skincare to me is like a ritual. It’s a really special time with yourself to just kind of give yourself some love,” she said. She sprays the mist “as many times as I want” and it leaves her with a hydrated, fresh-faced glow. (Not to mention, it smells incredible.)

Then she goes in with her Skin Transformation Cream, which contains ceramides, hyaluronic acid, and bakuchiol, a plant-based retinol alternative. While applying it, Keys says she likes “hitting my face” to promote blood circulation.

Then she adds a pop of color.

Keys doesn’t “want to fuss” with makeup. She prefers to keep it “low key” which is why Nars’ The Multiple Tint stick is ideal. With an orange shade and her fingertips, she applies a small amount to her cheeks, under the eyes, and along her hairline “to give the illusion that we’ve been in the sun all weekend.”

Next is not-so-typical eyeliner.

Using the Diorshow Stylo Waterproof Eyeliner in matte blue, Keys lightly lines her top waterline, just halfway in from the outer corner. “It still looks super natural,” she said. That’s why she prefers to stay away from dark black liners and instead goes for blue, brown, and even green. “These kinda colors I find that they do a little trick to your eyes,” she explained.

Lastly, she applies mascara.

The go-to is Chanel Le Volume de Chanel Waterproof in brun. She applies it as heavily or as lightly as she’s feeling in the mood for that day. “To me, that’s what beauty is. Beauty is complementing your mood. It’s an accessory for you to express,” she said. “However you wanna do it is right.”

At the end of the video, Keys encouraged viewers to take the extra time to establish a regular self-care routine, whether it includes makeup or not. “Taking care of yourself gives you a really beautiful boost of self-confidence,” she said. “I love the practice of getting used to loving on myself.”
