Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez slams 'card-carrying and flag-waving racists'

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez isn’t mincing her words after her likening of migrant detention centers to concentration camps sparked fierce debate.

Though a new report has highlighted the bleak conditions at holding centers, the New York Congresswoman’s remarks were criticized by conservatives such as Rep. Liz Cheney, Sen. Lindsey Graham and Rep. Steve King.

King, an Iowa Republican who has been at the center of several controversies involving white nationalist rhetoric, suggested that Ocasio-Cortez visit Auschwitz to avoid comparisons to death camps.

She wasted no time in rebuffing the offer, noting that King lost his House committee assignments earlier this year after questioning why it was “offensive” to have a "white nationalist, white supremacist, Western civilization.”

In a second tweet, she cited reports that, during his trip to Auschwitz last year, King met with a group founded by a former Nazi officer.

She went on to blast what she called “completely certified, card-carrying and flag-waving racists.”

“They can take their little tiki torches somewhere else,” she added, referencing the tiki torches that appeared during a white nationalist protest in Charlottesville in 2017.

Ocasio-Cortez’s tweets — the last of which has more than 158,000 likes — drew both outcry and praise.

One right-wing commentator reacted by accusing her of being an “America-hating, privileged loon,” while another critic mocked her past career as a bartender. Some also took her “flag-waving” line to be a dig at anyone waving the American flag, which one supporter tried to dispel.

Others cheered her on and joined her in slamming racists.
