What easier way to transition into film than by playing yourself? Lucky for Alessandra Ambrosio, she won’t have to stretch her acting chops too much for her big screen debut. While courtside at a New York Knicks game with Will Arnett on Wednesday, the Victoria’s Secret model planted a smooch on the comedian’s cheek. And while they’d make a super cute couple, it turns out they’re actually just co-stars. Ambrosio will play Arnett’s love interest in the upcoming Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2 film, hitting theaters this June. The 33-year-old Brazilian model’s made cameos on shows like Gossip Girl and Entourage, but this marks her real arrival in Hollywood.

Of course, Ambrosio’s not the first model to add “/actress” to her resume; but neither is she the first model to break into the movies via a male-centric franchise. In fact, Rene Russo might have kicked off the trend. In the ‘70s, the model graced glossies like Vogue and Cosmopolitan before transitioning into an acting career in the ‘80s via Lethal Weapon 3 & 4. (She kept up the macho movie streak, more recently starring in the Thor series alongside Chris Hemsworth).

Ukrainian model Milla Jovovich, who’s been on the cover of more than 100 magazines and appeared in campaigns ranging from L’Oreal to Versace, first starred in the action-horror film Resident Evil in 2002 and the film’s four subsequent sequels. Rebecca Romijn made a name for herself as a Sports Illustrated and Victoria’s Secret model in the late ‘90s and continued to show off her killer body as Mystique, a power-player mutant, in the X-Men franchise. And most recently, British expat Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, a Victoria’s Secret Angel and the former face of Burberry, replaced Megan Fox’s character for the third Transformers film, Dark of The Moon in 2011.

Though it may seem unlikely, the transition from runway beauty to badass big screen babe clearly isn’t an anomaly. And it makes a lot of sense: men turn out in droves for major blockbusters with storylines they already know and characters they already love, so why not throw a supermodel into the mix? Who could possibly appreciate the presence of an Amazonian babe more than a diehard Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle fan? And why not have beautiful women show off their acting prowess—and enviable ass-kicking superpowers—on a platform for millions to see? Here’s to girl power! And, while we’re at it, to Ambrosio’s first multi-million dollar flick.
