ALERT: Multistate Salmonella Outbreak Linked to Pre-Cut Melon Sickens 60 People
Romaine lettuce isn't the only produce you have to worry about this summer. The Centers for Disease Control just announced a multistate outbreak of Salmonella Adelaide linked to pre-cut melon from Catio Foods. Sixty people have reported being infected with the outbreak strain and 31 people have been hospitalized.
The outbreak is linked to fresh cut watermelon, honeydew melon, cantaloupe, and fresh-cut fruit medley containing these melons. They were sold in clear, plastic clamshell containers at Costco, Jay C, Kroger, Payless, Owen’s, Sprouts, Trader Joe’s, Walgreens, Walmart, and Whole Foods/Amazon in the following states: Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Missouri, North Carolina, and Ohio.
The CDC warns that the consumption of products with Salmonella may result in serious illness that can sometime be fatal in young children, elderly people, or others with weakened immune systems. There is still an ongoing investigation to determine how these products were contaminated and if they were shipped to other states outside of the ones mentioned above.
