Alert! Your Favorite Skincare Brand Has A New Sunscreen

When you hear people say sunscreen, you probably think of the obvious brands lining the shelves at the drugstore or Sephora.

But you're probably starting to notice more SPF options out there made by brands you normally go to for moisturizer, serums, or foundation. And no, I'm not talking about SPF-infused makeup (which often has an SPF of 15, below the dermatologist-recommended 30). I'm talking straight-up sunscreen.

A rise in sunscreen launches from beauty brands might make sense given recent research into consumer behavior: According to one study published in 2022, the spread of the pandemic boosted interest in skincare products (including sunscreen) and dampened interest in makeup products like lipstick and foundation.

Meet the expert: Aanand Geria, MD, is a board-certified dermatologist based in Verona, New Jersey.

Rest assured that sunscreens from a makeup or skincare label are still subject to the same FDA approval process as all other sunscreens. "The FDA's testing and approval process is conducted to prove the product's SPF factor, water resistance, and broad-spectrum protection," says Aanand Geria, MD, a board-certified dermatologist based in Verona, New Jersey.

But before you buy, here are a few dermatologist-recommended factors to keep in mind to make sure you're getting the coverage your skin needs.

• Look for broad-spectrum protection: A broad-spectrum sunscreen ensures your skin is protected against both UVB and UVA rays. UVA rays can cause premature aging while UVB rays can cause sunburns, and both types of rays increase the risk of skin cancer, says Dr. Geria.

• Aim for SPF 30 or higher: SPF 30 is the minimum number recommended by the American Academy of Dermatology. But if you have fair skin or a history of skin cancer, consider a sunscreen with a higher SPF level, Dr. Geria says.

• Choose a water-resistant formula: If you plan to be in the water or sweat, look for water-resistant sunscreen that can withstand moisture for at least 40 minutes, Dr. Geria says.

• If you have sensitive skin, consider a mineral sunscreen: Mineral sunscreens contain zinc oxide and titanium dioxide, which form a skin barrier and reflect UV rays, per the MD Anderson Cancer Center. "These sunscreens are less likely to cause skin irritation or allergic reactions, making them a better option for sensitive skin users," says Dr. Geria. On the contrary, chemical sunscreens contain chemicals, such as avobenzone and oxybenzone, that absorb UV rays and convert them into heat, Dr. Geria says. The upside? "These sunscreens usually have a thinner consistency and are easier to apply evenly."

Mineral UV Filters SPF 30 with Antioxidants

Known for its affordable line of skin-loving active ingredients (hi, retinoids and vitamin C), The Ordinary also makes a broad-spectrum mineral sunscreen that comes recommended by Dr. Geria. This pick is said to be suitable for most skin types, including sensitive skin.

Revitalift Broad Spectrum SPF 50 Invisible UV Fluid

This broad-spectrum facial sunscreen is SPF 50 and formulated with vitamins C and E. But since it's a chemical sunscreen rather than mineral-based, it may not be suitable for people with very sensitive skin.

ShadeDrops Broad Spectrum SPF 30 Mineral Milk Sunscreen

Another mineral sunscreen that's gentle yet effective for everyday use, Summer Fridays SPF 30 drops boast a lightweight, non-greasy formula that goes on with a matte finish. Its antioxidant complex includes vitamin E as well as squalene, a hydrating compound that helps fight signs of skin aging, per the Cleveland Clinic.

Physical Fusion UV Defense SPF 50

Dr. Geria approves this SkinCeuticals sunscreen because it checks all of the boxes: It's broad-spectrum, has a high SPF, and is water-resistant for up to 40 minutes. It's mineral-based and is lightly tinted.

Self Defense Mineral Sunscreen SPF 34

Jessica Alba's clean beauty brand, Honest, makes a broad-spectrum mineral sunscreen that's approved by the National Eczema Association. The zinc oxide in this formula is said to protect against UVA and UVB rays as well as blue light (from all that screen time). Plus, it's cruelty-free, vegan, reef-friendly, and hypoallergenic.

Urban Environment Oil-Free Sunscreen SPF 42

This classic beauty brand makes an oil-free yet hydrating sunscreen that keeps you matte throughout the day. Its hydration power comes from hyaluronic acid, which helps reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, per the Cleveland Clinic. Bonus: This sunscreen doubles as a primer, so you could easily wear it under makeup or on its own.

Banana Bright Mineral Sunscreen SPF 30

OLEHENRIKSEN seems to have a product for nearly every skin concern, sun protection included. Its Banana Bright Mineral Sunscreen is made with light-reflecting zinc as well as vitamin C to shield your skin against the sun. It's said not to leave a white cast, and it has a fresh citrusy scent.

Physical Protectant Tinted SPF 45

This broad-spectrum pick recommended by Dr. Geria is formulated with co-enzyme Q10 (also known as CoQ10), which has antioxidant effects, per a 2015 study in BioFactors. Its universal tint works well with most skin tones and it's water-resistant for up to 80 minutes.

Natural Hydrating Mineral Sunscreen SPF 30

Grown Alchemist's hydrating sunscreen, formulated with hyaluronic acid and rosehip oil, harnesses the power of ultra-sheer zinc oxide to protect against both UVA and UVB rays without leaving a white cast.

All Around Safe Block Soft Finish Sun Milk SPF50+

MISSHA's non-greasy, silky texture makes this sunscreen ideal for applying under makeup. However, you might find that you don't even need to apply foundation—reviewers rave that this leaves their skin looking even-toned on its own.

Sunnyside Brush-On Mineral Sunscreen SPF 50
