Aldi to open in Sturgis on March 16

STURGIS — The new Aldi store in the Sturgis Plaza is set to open at 9 a.m. March 16, officials representing the store chain announced this week.

The store, located at 811 S. Centerville Road, was announced last May by the company it would occupy the footprint that was home to Kroger until the fall of 2020. Aldi was a popular suggestion on social media when speculation ignited on what business should take the former Kroger spot.

Workers have been spending the past several months revamping nearly 23,000 square feet of the building, transforming the interior and replacing the brown brick facade with a modern look. Shoppers previously had to drive to either the Three Rivers or Coldwater Aldi locations, each about a 30-minute drive.

“Our stores are designed to make grocery shopping smarter, faster and easier, and we’ve been voted the price leader for six years running,” said Ryan Fritsch, Webberville regional vice president for Aldi, in a statement. “We’re excited to open our first Aldi store in Sturgis and introduce local customers to a new, more affordable way of shopping.”

The first 100 customers March 16 will receive a gift bag filled with Aldi product samples and a gift card as part of the store’s Golden Ticket gift card giveaway program. Patrons may also enter a sweepstakes between March 16 and 19 for a chance to win a $500 store gift card.

More than 1,000 new ALDI stores have opened throughout the country in the past 10 years, according to the company. The Sturgis store will be open daily from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.
