Alabama mayor defends Facebook post on ‘killing out’ LGBTQ people, socialists and ‘baby killers’

The mayor of a small Alabama town is defending a Facebook post lamenting LGBTQ individuals, socialists and “baby killers,” later commenting that “killing them out” was the only solution to save the country’s future. Now, residents and people online are calling for Mayor Mark Chambers to step down.

In a Facebook post (that has since been deleted), Carbon Hill, Ala. mayor Mark Chambers reportedly wrote, “We live in a society where homosexuals lecture us on morals, transvestites lecture us on human biology, baby killers lecture us on human rights and socialists lecture us on economics.”

According to reports from local news station WBRC, a Facebook friend commented on the post that he “hates to think of the country that my grandkids will live in,” adding that real change will “take a revolution.”

Hill then replied to his friends comment, writing, “The only way to change it would be to kill the problem out. I know it’s bad to say but without killing them out there’s no way to fix it.”

Chambers was elected as the mayor of Carbon Hill in 2014 with the hopes of making the town he grew up in “a better and safer place to work and live,” according to the Carbon Hill city website.

Yahoo Lifestyle attempted to reach Mayor Chambers and the Carbon Hill City Hall, however both phone numbers were either not accepting messages or had been disconnected.

Chambers initially denied writing the post to WBRC, insisting that it was somebody else’s post. The Alabama mayor later retracted his statement, saying that he intended for the post and the conversation to be a private, angered that his Facebook wasn’t meant for the public, despite the fact that his privacy settings were public. Chambers has since made his account private.

Chambers later defended the comments saying that they were taken out of context and that he didn’t mean to say anything about harming the LGBTQ community. “I never said anything about killing out gays or anything like that,” Chambers told WRBC. He told a reporter that he meant to say that “both sides” would be “killed out” in the event of a revolution.

“That’s in a revolution. That’s right! If it comes to a revolution in this country both sides of these people will be killed out," he said.

After the local news story aired, Chambers issued a public apology on his Facebook account, admitting that “I alone am responsible for the comment that was made.”

“Although I believe my comment was taken out of context and was not targeting the LGBTQ community, I know that it was wrong to say anyone should be killed,” Chambers wrote in a Facebook post, adding that he has worked hard to make the small town a better place its families.

“There are not enough words for me to express how much a regret posting that comment. I hope very much our Citizens and anyone that was hurt by this comment can accept my apology.”

However, people online say his apology isn’t enough— they want Chambers to resign from office. “It is my opinion that you are unfit to be an elected official, should resign and also seek help for issues that literally have you talking about murdering human beings,” one Facebook user commented on his apology post.

Meanwhile, other users called into question Chamber’s mental stability for showing “severe murderous and threatening thoughts,” particularly during a time when mental health and mass shootings are the source of heated national debate.

“With the mass shootings and domestic terrorism stuff going on we need to have mechanisms in place so people can get help or intervene on [people] who can't deal with reality and their fellow Americans/human beings,” one user commented.
