Airbnb is Offering Free Temporary Housing to Those Impacted by the Nashville Tornadoes

Airbnb is pitching in to help those displaced by the deadly tornadoes that hit Nashville and Middle Tennessee Tuesday.

In the aftermath of the disaster that claimed the lives of at least 25 people, Airbnb announced its Open Homes program would offer free, temporary housing to those in need of it in Tennessee. "This includes relief workers, neighbors who’ve had to evacuate, and others impacted by the event," the company's website states.

Airbnb spokesperson Mattie Zazueta told USA Today that more than 170 hosts signed up to offer their homes in the first few hours after they activated the program.

WZTV reports that the program will be available through March 24 in Nashville and surrounding areas, including Benton, Caroll, Davidson, Wilson, Putnam, and Gibson counties.

“As we continue to work with local agencies and disaster relief organizations on the ground to offer our support, we encourage hosts to open up their homes and those in need of housing to take advantage of our community’s generosity,” Kristen Berlacher, Airbnb’s Head of Causes for Open Homes, told WZTV.

The idea for Open Homes dates back to 2012, when hosts offered their homes for free to neighbors who were forced to evacuate after Hurricane Sandy hit New York. Inspired by their generosity, Open Homes later became an official part of Airbnb.
