Party's over folks. If you were planning on renting out a fancy space on Airbnb in the near future (like one of these grandiose castles!) and inviting all your friends to come through to celebrate a special occasion, it’s time to hit the brakes. Today Airbnb announced a global ban on all parties and events for all listings indefinitely until further notice.
This means that all listings that previously were said to be “event-friendly” or allowed parties and events, such as baby showers or birthday parties, can no longer accommodate guests in that way, even if the host is OK with it. Furthermore, all listings that typically allowed 16+ guests are now limited to a 16 guest maximum.
Since the outbreak of the pandemic, Airbnb has removed the “event-friendly” search filter and edited any listings that read “parties and events allowed” to no longer include that information. Although these properties are still available to rent, the company hopes that guests will be responsible and follow its COVID-19 health guidelines.
This announcement to globally ban parties also comes after a recent unauthorized party was thrown at a Sacramento, California, rental where three guests were shot. The platform has informed the party thrower of its intent to take legal actions.
Airbnb notes that "in many large jurisdictions, public health mandates on gatherings have changed–and in some places swung back and forth in response to the changing rates of COVID cases." With this in mind, the platform hopes guests will not bring bar-like behavior back to their rentals in areas where the nightlife scene has returned post-pandemic.
For U.S. and Canada residents, a 24/7 neighborhood support hotline allows neighbors to directly communicate with Airbnb to help enforce the party house ban or any other suspicious behavior. This hotline plans to expand globally in the future.
