Ahluwalia RTW Fall 2021

Priya Ahluwalia has been adapting to the rhythm of life during lockdown, so for fall 2021 she was able to present a wider range, play with new silhouettes, and develop a striking new logo, shaped like a compass and surrounded by four afro combs.

As her label gains ground — her commitment to driving industry change gained her a fashion award and an invitation to participate in GucciFest last year — she is starting to think more globally and offer men’s wear for a variety of occasions and weather conditions. Cue cool, reversible puffer jackets and more tailoring. The latter was given the Ahluwalia treatment by way of bold ombré prints or graphic patterns, which channeled the designer’s growing confidence.

She also wove a bigger social narrative into the range. Inspired by Yaa Gyasi’s book “Home Going” and the story it tells of two sisters separated at birth, Ahluwalia wanted to highlight the social impact of migration and did so with subtle, clever touches: Graphic stripes or patterns referenced migration maps; the jewel-toned color palette was an homage to Black artists such as Jacob Lawrence or Kerry James Marshall; and the mix-and-match attitude of the clothes — often made from a patchwork of repurposed fabrics — paid tribute to the Harlem Renaissance.
