After Broncos blow another late lead, Joe Flacco questions play-calling

The Denver Broncos are frustrated, and rightfully so.

Three times this season, a questionable 15-yard penalty on the defense has led to a last-minute field goal and a Broncos loss. This Sunday, it happened against the Indianapolis Colts. Adam Vinatieri hit a 51-yard field goal with less than a minute to go to give the Colts a 15-13 win.

The Broncos could have put the game away long before Jacoby Brissett’s final drive, the soft penalty call for a horse-collar tackle or Vinatieri’s kick. And Broncos quarterback Joe Flacco didn’t hold back after the game. And it’s not like Flacco to say controversial things.

You know frustration is at a high level when a veteran quarterback, who rarely says anything inflammatory, is terming the play-calling “afraid.”

It’s not hard to figure out what irked Flacco. On third-and-5 right after the two-minute warning and with the Broncos at the Colts’ 43-yard line, Denver handed it off to Phillip Lindsay up the middle. He was stopped for no gain. That made it a tougher call to go for it on fourth down. The Broncos punted, and lost. It was a very conservative call, and it bit them in the end.

Not much has gone right for the Broncos, and their quarterback isn’t pleased.
